So this very nice lady came off of an early plane and sat down in the gate area with her daughter to get her stuff around. her cell phone rang, she answered and i could not help over hearing part of her conversation. It is still ringing in my ears.

"Hey Jeannie? Its Angie... We're OK. We have a flight later on out to you in Denver."

~pause~

yes, they got us out of n'orleans yesterday morning and we were able to get tickets through indianapolis.

~pause~

well, the house is under water and all tore up. Nothing left. We were on the roof til the waters were up to my waist and i was holding gillie.

~pause~

some nice man came by on a door. he took our place on the house so we could be on the door. I couldn't hold gillie up.

~pause~

No, I did not see if he got picked up, we floated pretty far away out of sight of the neighbor good. His name was Johnny and he was very nice. Said to get on the door and take care of my little one

~pause~

yeah, I hope he is ok too. Well, I need to find out where my gate is. See you in a few hours.

~pause~

love you too. bye.

She looked up to see a small pile of twenty dollar bills had grown on her stroller where almost every one of us in the gate area dropped one on our way by.

I have to wonder and hope 'Johnny' is ok too.

This world is full of heroes most of us never get to meet.

All the more reason that we need to tell these stories. So far, the newspapers and TV have broadcast the destruction and the looting. Rarely do we ever get to see/hear the stories that make us PROUD of our fellow human beings.

That is really powerful.

Since truth is stranger than fiction, there is always the hope Johnny will come through OK.

But OTOH, :/ plenty of real-life heroes don't have their stories end so well. We can all continue hoping for the best, and reaching out to survivors in all the ways we can...

Suggestion: If you go to a Labor Day party, picnic, any such large funtion this weekend...put out a Red Cross donation box (or encourage the host to.)

Found this via SCAtoday. Stories like this always make me feel solemn, and glad that there are still people like this out there, even in the midst of all the awful reports we're hearing about New Orleans over here. I, too, hope that Johnny is alright after such an incredible act of selflessness.

Sent this link yesterday to a friend in the UK who was complaining that he hadn't heard "a single story of devotion to others from this city from any local person over the age of 6". He was very glad to read it, and hopes very much that Johnny made it, which pretty much echos my sentiment.
